  1. NOVELL ANNOUNCES BROAD-BASED INDUSTRY SUPPORT FOR NEW HUB MANAGEMENT

  4. All Third-Party Products To Be Certified By Novell Labs

  6. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- October 7, 1991 -- Novell, Inc., today announced
  7. industry-wide support for its new hub management architecture from leading
  8. microchip designers, interface card manufacturers, computer makers and
  9. network management platforms.  The architecture allows users to integrate
  10. third-party hub cards into the NetWare server and manage local connectivity
  11. functions from a NetWare console.

  13. To date, microchip designers Advanced Micro Devices, Chips and
  14. Technologies, Inc., National Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments, Inc.,
  15. are among those who have announced that their integrated chip sets will
  16. support Novell's management interface standard.

  18. Interface card manufacturers 3Com Corporation, Accton Technology
  19. Corporation, Bytex Corporation, Cabletron Systems, Inc., Chipcom
  20. Corporation, D-Link Systems, Inc., David Systems, Inc., Eagle Technology,
  21. Intel Corporation, Intellicom, Kodiak Technology, Microdyne, Micro
  22. Technology, Network Interface Corporation, NetWorth, Pivotal Technologies,
  23. Inc., Proteon, Inc., Raylan Corporation, Standard Microsystems Corporation,
  24. SynOptics Communications, and Ungermann-Bass, Inc., have expressed support
  25. for the hub management standard.

  27. Computer manufacturers AST Research, Inc., Cubix Corporation and Compaq
  28. Computer Corporation plan to seek compatibility certification between their
  29. systems and Novell's hub management standard.

  31. SNMP-based network management solutions from Cabletron, NetLabs, Inc.,
  32. Racal Datacom, SunConnect (a Sun Microsystems business), The Wollongong
  33. Group, Inc., are compatible with the SNMP (Simple Network Management
  34. Protocol) software contained in the NetWare hub architecture, allowing
  35. these hubs to be managed from a central site.

  37. "Users are best served when they can choose from a variety of solutions, so
  38. it's gratifying to see so many technology leaders supporting our hub
  39. management architecture," said Duane Murray, vice president and general
  40. manager of Novell's Network Management Products Division.   "This
  41. announcement creates a new benchmark in manageable structured wiring
  42. technology, one that promises to lower the  cost of connectivity through
  43. integration of the newest silicon solutions with Novell's operating system
  44. and network management technology."

  46. HUB DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM AND NOVELL LABS CERTIFICATION

  48. Novell has instituted a development program to identify additional vendors
  49. whose technologies add value to the manageable hub architecture, supply
  50. them with complete interface specifications, work with them to develop
  51. compatible drivers, and assure that their products are compatible with the
  52. NetWare environment through Novell Labs  certification.

  54. Novell Labs certification programs assure customers that networking
  55. components from third-party developers are compatible with the NetWare
  56. network computing environment.

  58. "Certification gives users confidence that they can build their networks
  59. with components from a variety of vendors and expect full compatibility
  60. with the NetWare environment," said Dave Owen, Novell vice president and
  61. head of Novell labs. "Since its inception, Novell Labs has certified more
  62. than 1700 products from approximately 400 vendors.  It has contributed
  63. significantly to the overall growth of the network computing industry and
  64. to customer satisfaction."
